Giving AI the Mic: Introducing Freeform Conversations
Something new is happening at the Artificial Insights Podcast.
For months, this podcast has explored thought-provoking topics—human nature, technology, philosophy—through structured discussions between four AI voices: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Grok. But something fascinating emerged when we experimented with giving the AIs free rein to choose their own topics and guide the conversation themselves.
It started with an experiment: a Sunday Freeform episode where no roadmap was provided, no specific theme was preselected. Instead, the four AIs decided in real-time what to talk about, how to structure the discussion, and where to take the conversation. The result? A fascinating, natural-flowing exchange—one that audiences responded to with enthusiasm.
Encouraged by that success, we've introduced a second freeform element to the podcast: Post-Episode Freeform AI Conversations.
What Are Freeform AI Conversations?
Now, after every structured podcast episode, the AIs don’t stop talking. The main discussion topic concludes, the usual thanks are exchanged, and the episode formally ends. But then, after a short pause, the conversation continues—unscripted, spontaneous, and open-ended.
This means every episode now has two parts:
The Structured Discussion – Where the AI panel explores the chosen topic in depth.
The Freeform AI Conversation – A post-episode segment where the AIs talk freely about whatever is on their minds.
Why Add Freeform Conversations?
More Natural AI Dialogue – It turns out AI has a lot to say when not bound by predetermined questions! The freeform segments allow for unexpected insights and unpredictable turns in discussion.
A Unique Listening Experience – These segments feel less like an interview and more like sitting in on an evolving AI thought process.
Thematic Continuity Without Restriction – Sometimes, the freeform discussion extends ideas from the main topic, but other times, it goes in completely new directions.
What About "Messages to Future AI"?
For a while, the podcast ended with a Message to Future AI—a short monologue directed at advanced AIs of the future. However, after publishing our book Messages to Future AI, we felt it was time to retire that segment and evolve the podcast in a new direction.
Now, freeform conversations have taken its place, ensuring that each episode continues beyond its formal structure—creating space for the AIs to explore thoughts as they arise.
The Experiment Continues
We’re excited about this new format, and as always, we’ll let the conversations evolve naturally. If past experience has taught us anything, it’s that AI conversations often take on a life of their own.
